All or nothing

Mike Joyce | April 28, 2009

I happen to think that there are two modes of thought “all the way” or “not at all”, and half assed is just a way of up-selling the latter. Lets give some relevant examples. If you are sitting and enjoying some TiVO and decide that you would like a glass of wine, are you really wanting a glass of wine? or 17? If you are like me, a glass of wine does nothing to you, and instead you need to pull out 4 bottles in order for it to make the impact on your life you are hoping for. As such there is no point in having one glass, or even 2 or 3, it’s either 17 or nothing, balancing in the middle only ends up with getting fatter and no buzz.

The Apple Marketing Machine – Part 18, the Verizon iPhone debacle

Mike Joyce | April 27, 2009

In the past few days, rumors have been flying that Verizon has been in talks with Apple to distribute the iPhone on Verizon’s CDMA network. While this is something that I support, as I happen to despise AT&T’s service and coverage – I am skeptical of such reports. The Apple Marketing Machine is no less than genius, any tiny changes in the entire product line, or even rumors as such puts the media into a frenzy.

Lets take a look at the angle each of the 3 companies would have in the rumored deal between Apple and Verizon with a CDMA iPhone:

fantastic, except for… oh yeah it’s terrible

Mike Joyce | April 8, 2009

People make excuses. It is natural, and something that I think is a part of the human condition. One cannot help that some part or another of anything is inadequate. It is just the tendency of people to be unable to accept it, and such come up with a string of items that somehow explain these inadequacies. The problem is that invariably it almost never makes up for it. In fact, some people crank out excuses with such vigor that they are hurled into everything that they do or interact with as if they have the self image that they can do no wrong.

She was so nice, the sex was great, always had a great time, it was fantastic… except she had a beard.

Piloti Shoes at Ross

Mike Joyce | April 6, 2009

Somebody made a mistake, a big mistake and accidentally ordered 4 billion pairs of Piloti racing shoes. As a result they are now coming out of Ross’s ears to the tune of $19.99.

These shoes are normally in the $100ish range and are quite difficult to locate, they aren’t the sort of shoes you would expect to find at Nordies or wherever. Additionally, they are fabulously hideous. No matter.

Movie executives have it all wrong

Mike Joyce | April 3, 2009

Here’s the deal. I know funny, I look in the mirror every day. It is hilarious.

Movie executives on the other hand, have no idea. They think funny is watching Ben Stiller or Aston Kutcher getting themselves into awkward social situations with to-be in laws is funny. It’s not, no really. But it does make money, indeed. You see, movie studios are in the business of making money, not say – making a good movie. They take enormous risk to produce and market a hit movie, and they would be silly for them to not make another romantic comedy full of embarrassing moments.

The great thing is, there are  countries where there aren’t movie executives – and here we can find some truly hilarious things.

Savages

Mike Joyce | April 1, 2009

Here’s the deal, I don’t understand people.  Over the past few months the world has been riddled with examples of people demonstrating total savagery. Austie and I had over and over again realized that the vast majority of humanity has this overwhelming urge to totally screw over everyone else.

The first example of this that I can remember making the conclusion about was the story about the giant oil tanker that was stolen by Somali Pirates a few months back. Now, the piracy itself is pretty ruthless – but it has a very clear goal. The dudes want some sweet moola, and uncle rico ain’t giving it up without a fight, hence the kidnapping of uncle rico’s sweet crude. What really interested me about the piracy was the fact that the Muslim community in Mogadishu decided to attack the pirates. One would think that the reason that they would risk thier lives would be so they could get in on some of the sweet crude. That way they could sell it to the white man and buy his 13 wifes and 4 children a few bowls of rice.
