I picked up a 12 Gallon JBJ Nano Cube with a stand on Craigslist recently and decided to make it into a Planted tank for my house. After the success of my 3 Gallon Pico I went into this project with relative confidence. I made a big order from a few places online for all of the livestock.
I replaced the default 10k/Atinic bulbs with some 6700k bulbs. Now with 48w of 6700k, I consider it a ‘high light’ system! I am using Flourite gravel. I chose it because it was slightly cheaper than Aquasoil and easier to come by. I bought some plants from a trader online as well as an online retailer and planted everything the day I filled it up. I dose the tank with Excel for carbon - although it has crossed my mind that I should use CO2. The system started pearling O2 after a few days. Unless I have problems with growth I will continue to use the Excel.
I have a number of fish in the tank:
- 2x Cardinal Tetras
- 2x King Cobra Guppies
- 3x Harequean’s
- 2x Little Gobies
- Lots of snails
